It's all happening at the zoo...

The Bronx Zoo, that is (kradical, the members t-shirt this year features ring-tailed lemurs!), where we betook ourselves today. It was chill but sunny, and we were rewarded with some of the most amazing animal sightings in all my years at the zoo, including snow leopards making like house cats with the chasing and the pouncing and the peering intently at close range at all these funny bipedals with camera...

and OMG the polar bear. Words cannot describe the sight of a polar bear with bath toys.

So I have pictures to show you.

I've only been to the Bronz Zoo once but the polar bears were awesome then. Maybe they're just awesome all the time? One had a big plastic floaty toy and he kept trying to sink it by climbing on and then it'd pop back up and he'd try again... I could have watched the polar bear antics all day!

they're awesome when the weather suits them. Once it warms up, they prefer to lurk in the coolth of their caves...

Someday I need to scan and post up my photos from the Amsterdam Zoo. They have the biggest damned polar bear ever - a HUGE male.

But I'm dying over your shot of the bear on hs back in the pool. Was he playing with that ball?

Yep. If you go to the flickr site, you can see more shots, including when he overshot and had to haul himself out of the water to get it back.

and (unless they switched bears out on us in the past few years) he's still a youngish male -- and the size is already scary as hell. His paws are the size of old-fashioned dinner plates.

A few years back he was there with momma and SHE was awesome.

Oh, man, I remember when our female polar bear was born, raised in the nursery, and the day the public was allowed to stream past and watch her. Little Girl Knut. I just looked at her and melted, said WANT and then realised that, in about eight months, she would see me as a nom nom nom moment, or a tasty protein supplement.

Last time we went (end of summer season) they had recently opened a new area, showing African wild dogs. And lemme tellya, they were livin' the wild life. :^)

they were mostly a puppy-pack of ground potatoes when we stopped by -- very cute, sprawled with paws in the air, but not too interesting to photograph (I took one anyway, up on the flickr set, just cause I love tier coats).
