WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fran Townsend, President Bush's top White House-based adviser on terrorism and homeland security, has resigned, it was announced Monday.

President Bush said in a statement that Townsend "has ably guided the Homeland Security Council. She has played an integral role in the formation of the key strategies and policies my administration has used to combat terror and protect Americans."

Her departure continues an exodus of key Bush aides and confidants, with his two-term presidency in the final 15 months. Top aide Karl Rove, along with press secretary Tony Snow and senior presidential adviser Dan Bartlett, left earlier this year.

Which really does raise the question -- haw many rats can jump off the back of a lame duck, anyway? At some point does the duck skin fall away and reveal only rats? Or is there really a wee duck in there somewhere?

if a rat quacks in an oval office and no one is there to hear it, does he make a sound?

Scary thing is, if one of the GOP wack-jobs currently running manages to win next November, we'll see all the rats handing in CVs for jobs in the new administration. Meanwhile, the rest of us will quietly move to New Zealand.....

Much depends on how fat and bloated the rats and the duck are, and whether they have scaffolding and harnesses, and how stupid they really are. Just saying.

It's not so much the rats, as it is their infected fleas.

If you see all the rights making for mass exodus from the ship... it is generally a sign of flooding and the ship is about to keel over.

That was meant to say rats , not rights... but then again... appropriate as well.
