Open Thread!
Oct. 25th, 2007 12:10 pmCrazy-busy today and tomorrow and possibly all weekend. I hereby declare an Open Thread. Chat away! Amuse me! Confuse me! Astonish and amaze me!
-----------------------------
The news last night was reporting, among other things, video footage of a guy who went into a convenience store and, bypassing the cash register, went for...the candy aisle.
They estimate he got away with almost $300 of candy and chips.
Dudes, that is the best example of pot use leading to crime that I have ever seen. Seriously.
And while I'm being shallow... has anyone else in the NYC area seen the "set for life" lottery commercials? And has anyone else wondered why this guys who've just won $100,000 a year for the rest of their lives... are sitting there eating in a fast food restaurant? Cause I'd be at Daniel, or Alain Ducasse. Just sayin'.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:17 pm (UTC)I'd be at La Grotto Guelpa, just off the Lungarno in Tuscany. Or at Harry's Bar in Venice, sucking down real bellinis from the source.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:28 pm (UTC)Because not everyone has the palate for such places. I was just talking to a co-worker about what I'd do if I won a multi-million-dollar lottery. I realized that I wouldn't change a great deal about my life. I'd still work because I love my work, though I might (just might) switch gears and teach instead (I'm enjoying my new adjunct position at City College). I'd pay off the mortgage. Maybe (only maybe) move to a nicer house elsewhere in Brooklyn. Sock away a mil-and-change to cover higher education for the kids. I like my car, and see little need for any vehicle that costs more than $25,000. I'm not into boats. I'm not fond of beaches for more than a week at a time, so no desire to own a beach house down south. I don't ski, snowmobile or snowboard, so I wouldn't be hob-nobbing in Aspen. Much as I enjoy travel in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the only other places I desire to visit are my father's hometown in Sicily, and my grandparents' hometowns in Ireland. And I'd still crave a Wendy's double-cheese-with-everything-no-onion, or a Subway's BMT-on-herb-and-cheese-with-swiss-all-the-veggies-oil-and-vinegar-no-onions from time to time.

Date: 2007-10-25 05:07 pm (UTC)Confuse, astonish or amaze? I found the idea of The Museum of Broken Relationships both confusing and astonishing. Confused as to how it occurs to someone and astonished at the things people have donated.

Date: 2007-10-25 06:32 pm (UTC)$100K a year for life would keep me out of McDonald's, but not necessarily Subway; I have enough frugal Scots ancestry -- and sufficiently declassé culinary tastes -- that I'd resist going overboard with gourmet dining. And sometimes a sandwich is just a sandwich. OTOH, I'd certainly travel more, and indulge more of my theater-buff urges.

Date: 2007-10-25 08:47 pm (UTC)True story. Several years ago, my Grandfather sold a Carnival Fortune Teller machine to David Copperfield (the magician who is one of the richest men in the US and being investigated by the Feds). Before purchasing Sybil, David came to my Grandparents house to see it and make sure of the the piece's condition. My Grandparents drove him to and from the airport and as a token of thanks, David offered to take them to lunch. They agreed and he directed them to go to the nearest McDonald's.
