Vick, redux

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The NFL indefinitely suspended Michael Vick without pay Friday just hours after he acknowledged in court papers that he did, indeed, bankroll gambling on dogfighting and helped kill some dogs not worthy of the pit.

Vick, however, insisted he placed no bets of his own nor took any winnings.

In disciplining Vick, commissioner Roger Goodell said Vick's admitted conduct was ''not only illegal but also cruel and reprehensible'' and regardless whether he personally placed bets, ''your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL player contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player.''


IOW: homey don' play dat, and Goodell don't give a goddamn how much money you did/didn't make, he doesn't want you around, you're bad for legitimate sports.

Go NFL.

Hey, LAG, I like the slapfight goin' on between Tiki and Eli. Eli is finally showing some Man stuff. I've never questioned his skills, but he's always looked so timid to me. I like this new talkin' back guy.

Tiki has never been shy of shooting off his mouth, that's for sure. So long as he could back it up on the field, much was forgiven. Let's hope Eli can kick it up a notch or three to answer back both verbally and off the playbook....

Okay, I have an actual question for your brain-- I posted this on my blog and it'd be interesting to get your take on it.

General/Other: Dale Peck's BODY SURFING, a dark literary thriller about a race of demons who possess their prey, moving from body to body via sexual release, and the female hunter bent on destroying them, to Peter Borland at Atria

I have to think if this had been written by a woman, what do you want to make a bet it would have been classified as something other than dark literary thriller?

Or am I being way, way too cynical?

I think that it has less to do with the gender of the author, and more to do with the tone of the storytelling, honestly. At least in terms of editorial sales, if not bookbuyers. "Literary thriller" can go either way. If they were pushing it as a serial killer novel, supernatural or otherwise, then the gender of the author seems to make a difference. Likewise horror.

(dark fantasy really came into being in a lot of ways as a place to put these uppity wimmin who kept insisting on writing horror, because we didn't seem to understand that was No Place For Us. Feh.)

Feh, indeed and quite the sound argument.

I just can't shake the feeling that the sexual connotation of the story, if written by a woman, would be enough to have someone at least consider labeling it erotic urban fantasy to be shelved in romance and considered as such--given the heavy slant New York's been taking that way anyhow.

Or maybe I'm just being WAY too cynical.
