Are you awake? Are you aware? Are you paying attention?

If you're not, what are you missing?

It's pretty much my life-philosophy, as much as I have one -- the thing I see out of the corner of my eye is equal to the thing square in front of me, so it behoves me to look for them all.

In story-telling, it's even more important to be aware. Because sometimes the moment of realization comes up and bites you on the nose, or dances with veils on your desk... and sometimes it sneaks up on you. Until you are awake, and looking for the pattern, the connection, the hints and clues are just meaningless bits and fragments; life-noise.

Once the connection appears, tho? Magic.

In obviously-related news, I figured out what "Strong Earth" is about! Both layers (the obvious plot, and the underlying applicable-to-the-reader theme). And suddenly the title makes sense.

Now if I could just manage to write more than 300 words a day, that would be real progress. This story required so much fact-checking and rethinking (and rejiggering as history refuses to bend) that it's flowing smoothly but very very slowly. Frustrating as hell.

I was out in the garden pulling dandelions and thistles and noticing that a couple of stones in the rock wall were loose. Does that count as awake?

it depends. did you notice, or did you become aware? and once aware, did anything occur, or was the fact noted for later use? did it trigger a process?

it sounds like semantics, but I don't think it is. the brain, like anything else, has a use-or-lose clause in the fine print...
