I don't have to work 9-5 M-F, but I do expect myself to put in at least four solid hours a day, every day. Doesn't have to be on one particular project, and it doesn't always show an immediate result on the to-do list (i.e. reading a manuscript so that I can write copy for it, or doing research so I can write a scene properly), but there must be four hours every work-day*. That's the deal.
(I based that on a study a few years ago that said the average office worker got about three-four hours of 'real' work done around lunch, meetings, chit-chat and other distractions in an average work day)
*which means any day that I'm not otherwise claimed by personal obligations and/or officially on vacation.
