In light of the recent tax comments downstream, I offer the following URL

The Freelancer's Union: Platform for an Independent Workforce

Right now in baby steps, and mostly centered around NYC, but there's no membership fee and it's a good way to keep abreast of various legal and financial tidbits...

(plus, discounts!)

They're also pushing to create a health care plan that would cover more than New York State. The more members they have, the more of a potential purchasing block they have, the better a deal they can get...

You might want to convey this information to a certain ex-NYer living out near you, considering her recent healthcare needs....

D'you know [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], who is a freelance indexing goddess? And if you do not, you should. Mind if I link her here?

Freelancers Union is a fabulous resource and I can only second recommending keeping up with it. It was really helpful as I started sorting out details for going freelance.

Ruth used to volunteer for Working Today, from which sprung the F.U. (funny how that acronym comes up, huh?). Sara Horowitz, who started WT (and FU), is a recipient of the MacArthur "genius" grant--very well deserved, I say.

I'll join now. If they can move some of this up to CT, I'd be thrilled.

I keep meaning to ask how life in New Haven is? We love the beach, but I have to be frank: nothin' to do up here after October 1st and before May 1st. We spend the entire summer canoeing and wandering the hiking trails, but once winter hits, I sure miss the variety of restaurants and movie theaters and an easy train to Manhattan, etc. When we go out to dinner half the time, we either trek up to Providence (an hour) or down to New Haven (an hour) to discover some cool restaurant or neighborhood.

We still go to Manhattan now and then, but it's at least a 3 hour drive with now traffic, and about that with the train. And that's an hour too much. As you know, from writing, you need a town where you can step outside after a stretch of writing, and know that there's a coffeehouse open a few blocks away and you can be alone even when surrounded by people. Somehow, up there, that doesn't happen.

I never thought I'd say I miss Jersey City -- but...I miss Jersey City. We have the sea outside our window, and an incredible coastline here, but...I miss the city.

I think I'm enticed about New Haven. Can I drop you a line with some New Haven-specific questions? I'm at DClegg@DouglasClegg.com or my lj address. Thanks!
