It has been pointed out to me (in a 'bad kitty, no cool points!' way) that I do not know nor constantly employ popular e-phrases like "for the win," "internets," or most sort of leet-speak slang or abbreviations.

It's true.

I, too, have a life, but I also have a magpie mind. "Internets", like "series of tubes" is a snipe at Republican politicians, so I enjoy it.

(the first few times I saw it I thought it was cloyingly cute. Now I just roll my eyes and pass over it. But then, I used to do that with 'teh' before I discovered myself doing it, too, so I am, inevitably, doomed...)

Unless it's your kids abusing you, which is only to be expected. Lately when I point out some Internet oddity, she rolls her eyes and says, "Mom, that came out two months ago." However, she *hates* it when I use mangaspeak, so that's something.

As for "internets," out of context I don't know that the term would refers to. There's the Internet, and there there's internetworking from whence the term "internet" came... there is also the term "intranet" for e.g. an internal network within a company or site or such (to get geekish).

The Internet is one of the two best-known escaped lab experiments of the latter half of the 20th century (the other is Unix). "internet" the term merely was/is a designation for a communications network of communications network, made of up more than one network.

Jumping up and down doing self-promotion and policing of who's cool and who's not, is marketing ploy, not techie orientation... engineering deparments and marketing departments, and engineers and marcom specialists, are traditional enemies.

You're asking for logic from slang. This rarely follows. You get the combo of inner nerdom together with teh typo, and Bad Things Happen, is all.

I never learned rap or gangstah or Val Girl slang, either. I resist txtspk, too. I'm just no fun.

Actually, in this case, it was a friend tweaking me. Was a Funny that was more amusing for being totally, unapologetically true. We laughed about it, I thought it would amuse others as well. I didn't expect it to hit this many open nerves...

Back in the early 90s, I was the editor of a periodical for librarians. We were the first professional journal in the field to use contributors' email addresses, have a column about the internet, and quote from online discussion lists. I decided, in my capacity as EditorialGoddess, that we would say "the internet" as our style. It wasn't a proper noun but a collective space. I still call it that. I shall go check the Chicago Manual to see what they say these days.

I should point out that its parent company closed the magazine in 1995 after eighty-odd years of publishing. So I may have been innovative and forward looking, but not enough.

The problem is when people don't know the difference between that and proper English.

In an effort to help you over come your shame, I shall endeavor to teach you the language of 1337.

pwn= own. When you own someone as in kick their butt. Extremely important when you are playing WoW or some other MMORPG or online combat game.

frag= kill. As in I was fragging some players and I totally pwn'd them.

When you do get pwn'd, you need to tell your peeps that u were fragging someone when omgwtfbbq.

Of course you are already familiar with internets and teh.

However when something is really awesome it r0x0rs.
