quick tv notes
Oct. 12th, 2006 11:03 pmPoor battered beatdown Greggo. He did so good, our boy did. And he didn't use it for sympathy at all, not even when nobody would have blinked at it.
The first half hour of this episode was a solid "A" -- strong, unnerving, and evocative. I wish they'd had more in terms of the 'costumes' the kids were wearing, but I suspect there was stuff cut for time.
The second half of the ep, somehow, was weaker. And by weaker I mean still very good, but not as intense because they had so many things to deal with. This is one of the few eps I think might have been better served by a two-parter....
That said, watching the rest of the team deal with Greg's injuries, and their various reactions to the amoral nature of the killers.... the last scene was slightly forced, but the emotions were beautiful -- Catherine resigned, Nicky pissed, Warrick thoughtful, Sara judgemental and Gris quietly simmering.
I did find it interesting that they ony showed Sara (at the scene) and Grissom (in the ospital) interacting with Greg. Wonder what they're setting up.... (hope it's not a rivalry -- Gris and Sara are being cute, in their own quiet way. "Is that a challenge? *raised eyebrow, quizzical look* "No." heee. Also, hot.)
And then there was Shark. I still have to sit back and think about this one for a bit. Lots of character revelation and development, with a lot of backstory and all that juicy stuff. A nice move to take some of the weight off Woods, not that he isn't more than capable of carrying it all himself.
Overall? This show may yet eradicate my Shark phobia.
News:
1. Shut up about the plane accident, already. It was a terrible accident. It wasn't a city-wide trauma. And if you must speak of it, please try to remember that TWO people died there, not just one Yankee. Thank you.
2. Buffalo. Dudes. *hands out sweaters and shovels* Keep the snow for another month or so, 'k? After Thanksgiving, we're fair game. Not until then, tho.
But I forsee the heat coming on this weekend, hoo yah.

Date: 2006-10-13 12:41 pm (UTC)CSI on the other hand ... what can I say about this season so far that isn't good? Um ... nothing. It's all good. I've really liked how the episodes (excepting last week's gimmick) leave some matters unresolved, such as Greg's guilt and the boy's brother/friend/whatever apparent hatred. The writers are doing a good job IMO showing these cases aren't only compartments in the character's lives. There are consequences.
They've done it before, in other seasons, but with the big themes: Eddie and Catherine, Grissom and Sara, Warrick's gambling. This seaso, with the unresolved diorama killer, fallout from Sam's death, Grissom and Sara and (now, potentially) Greg, fallout from Greg's actions this last episode, life is getting more complicated in Vegas.
Sort of a nice riff of the "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" mantra, which the second victim noted in the hospital. I think the writers are saying that what happens actually does and doesn't stay in Vegas. Outsiders have to deal with their experiences and actions, but the people who actually live in Vegas have to deal with those experiences and actions as well. :-)

Date: 2006-10-13 12:54 pm (UTC)Oh, there was a pointy little message in that line, wearing pointy little kicking boots, wasn't there? No responsibility, no repercussions, no need for a conscience...and the human animal is worse than animal becuse it harms for fun.
I actually had a sense of watching a morality play, with all the different voices circling around to the theme... and the fact that I was aware of that, even as I was totally engrossed in the episode without any loss of suspension of disbelief, was pretty damned impressive writing on their side. As I siad, the only thing I might have wished as that last half had been given a little more depth and shading, and the scene in the locker room at the and had been given a little more 'oomph' somehow. But I suspect that would have required at least another 20 minutes to accomplish.
(yet another way that books are superior to tv shows: you can take the pages needed to get the scene right, ithot worrying about running over into the next book)

Date: 2006-10-13 02:28 pm (UTC)Could have done without K-Fed, but overall, a very good episode.
I hear ya about the plane.
And the snow? Can wait until AFTER Nov 26th, when we're safely back in Virginia after visiting family for T-Day in Michigan.

Date: 2006-10-13 11:44 pm (UTC)Agreed. Though for at least the early part of the coverage, they didn't know for sure who the other person was. Indeed, they only knew Lidle was one of the corpses because it was his plane and they found his passport on the street under the crash.
But yeah, it wasn't "Yankee pitcher +1," it was two people. That sort of thing pisses me off, too.
