lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)

"WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 — The House voted on Thursday to give the president the formal power to order wiretaps on Americans without a court order for 90 days, even as a federal judge in Detroit once again declared the administration’s program of wiretapping without warrants to be illegal."
---------------
"WASHINGTON, Sept. 28 — The White House ignored an urgent warning in September 2003 from a top Iraq adviser who said that thousands of additional American troops were desperately needed to quell the insurgency there, according to a new book by Bob Woodward, the Washington Post reporter and author. The book describes a White House riven by dysfunction and division over the war."

"...Under a broad new set of laws criminalizing speech that ridicules the government or its officials, some resurrected verbatim from Saddam Hussein’s penal code, roughly a dozen Iraqi journalists have been charged with offending public officials in the past year.

Currently, three journalists for a small newspaper in southeastern Iraq are being tried here for articles last year that accused a provincial governor, local judges and police officials of corruption. The journalists are accused of violating Paragraph 226 of the penal code, which makes anyone who “publicly insults” the government or public officials subject to up to seven years in prison."

And, via [livejournal.com profile] alfreda89:

"The only response is for the public to send a message this fall. In congressional races, your decision should always take into account the quality of the individual candidates. But this November, the stakes are higher. If this Republican party maintains control of all branches of government, the danger to individual liberty is extremely grave. Put aside all your concerns about the Democratic leadership. What matters now is that this juggernaut against individual liberty and constitutional rights be stopped. The court has failed to stop it; the legislature has failed to stop it; only the voters can stop it now. If they don't, they will at least have been warned."

-- Andrew Sullivan, The Daily Dish (read it!)

And that's without the ugly open can of worms the "torture? sure!" legisation has plated for us. Thanks, McCain. I am bitterly dsappointed in you, among others.

If anyone is looking for me, I'll be over in the corner, memorizing the Constitution (ob. F451 reference).

I think it maybe is time to start memorizing books.

The Andrew Sullivan excerpt blows my mind, He's been a big proponent of Unser Fuehrer Ueber Alles for a long time. If even the rats are looking down and realizing their feet are wet, you know it's bad.

Yeah, it makes me nervous when I was already planning to do what Sully said, albeit from a different standpoint.

Also, Bob Woodward's recent history makes me wonder if we can trust him anymore. :/

I don't even have words to express how I feel about this, I am that upset.

Yeah ... "trust" may have been a poor word choice. "Worth paying attention to" might have been better.

I just realized I may have given the wrong impression with the above comment. (Today is apparently not a good brain day for me.) "Is BW worth paying attention to?" was meant as a serious question, and not an insult to you, and I apologize if it was offensive.

Revolution anyone?

It certainly sounds like it's time for one? Couldn't we have a bloodless coup like Thailand?
