it's actually possible (if paperwork-generating and time-consuming) for agencies to do this with clients, but the direct freelance side.... not so much.
This wouldn't bother me if my bank would open a branch within waling distance. Alas... (and my bank is very good, which has kept me from switching to a closer one that charges more fees).
I was set up to take credit cards for dymk productions, because I had to in order to accomodate clients. But I try to avoid it in favor of paper checks when possible.
The thought of a bank within walking distance out here in rural Arizona is...wow. I was ecstatic when they put in a branch 7 miles away. The nearest one used to be 20 miles one-way.
At least one can deduct the mileage if one is going to deposit business-related checks. And use the trip to run other errands.
For PayPal I have clients add 5%. By the time the game of fee ping-pong has stopped, it's about right. I prefer not taking checks because for one thing, if they bounce, it's a massive hassle and I have to pay $30 per check.
You don't still get a little thrill, or at least a sense of satisfaction, opening the envelope and seeing the check made out in your name with actual money payable to you? I do. I remember direct deposit: there was money in the bank every other week or every month, but that was a regular paycheck. Freelancing, I still get a kick out of getting checks. (Okay, sure, there are the slow payers from whom any sort of money would be great, but in general....)

(this friendly warning from the guy that works for Paypal :)
