Note to self: never name anything electronic or mechanical after a character in a cancelled tv show, no matter how beloved the character or appropriate the name. Things will only end in tears.

RIP: Kaylee the laptop

However, since I have a Very Best Geek of a brother-in-law, my new laptop is already being assembled for me, with exactly what I need and nothing I don't, for $500 less than Kaylee cost me. And, also thanks to VBGB-i-L, I also have a desktop that will carry me througnh until the new kid arrives.

Now to see if VBGB-i-L or his stand-in at Best Buy can extract my data from the disk drive, or if I've really lost over a months' worth of work...

My deepest sympathy. When I had a laptop hard drive get cooked (literally - never buy Gateway), my favorite Genius Geek managed to retrieve all my essential data. He's bloody brilliant and located in Niantic, CT. If your other options don't come through I'd be glad to facilitate an introduction. He's a voracious reader, esp. of f&sf, so I'm guessing that "author" will be a magic word and he would gladly help.

It's too late now, but after my brush with disaster I acquired an external hard drive with a ridiculous quantity of disk space, for a ridiculously low price. Not only does it make back up dead easy, when I got a new computer it made it really simple to migrate all my files (including - yee haw - my Outlook email, tasks, contacts, calendar).

Owwww. I remember freaking out when my hard disk died. Fortunately, I'd taken the precaution of e-mailing the current project(s) to myself.

Hope the new machine works well and your data can be retrieved.

My day? Crap. My dog had a major siezure last night, cause unknown, and is in the hospital. He's 18 now, which is a great age even for a little one, but even so ...

You want them to live forever, you know?

Fingers crossed it was a one-off and he'll keep on puttering along. 3 hours prior he was his normal energetic little self.

Sorry about your laptop ... it's a bugger when computers bite the dust!

Still haven't sucked you over to the Apple side of the Force?

Clearly Terri is not doing her job.

What can I say ...
I hope they get the disk recovered for you.

If they don't there are places you can send it to, that will recover most of the information even if the surface has a scratch in it or the hard drive electronics are fried. It isn't cheap but I had it done once. Good luck.

Here's hoping you didn't lose the work as that is the worst feeling in the world. Never lost a months work before, but my pre-flash drive floppy melted a bio-lab paper once complete with a lot of data... I admit to crying about that.

Seriously though, it isn't hard to get stuff off of drives, so I'm sure it won't be a problem!

I will try to reign in my MAc proselytizing.
