The founder, publisher, and general God-Owner of Baen Books. Not unexpected (he had a major stroke and was in a coma) but the passing of an age. Whatever your personal feelings about the man, stand and show respect...

Consider me standing. Jim's moves in electronic media taught me a lot about what can be done there. I have to wonder how much more I could have done in the electronic publishing field if I'd been more open to Jim's ideas sooner.

Rest in peace, Jim.

I know Jim ticked a lot of people off, especially female writers. But he also did a lot for the field of spec. fiction as well. I can't help but wonder what will happen to Baen now that he is not there.

I'm so sad to hear this. :( I didn't know much about Jim Baen personally until reading David Drake's obituary, but it sounds like he was quite a guy. I was pulling for him to make it despite the dire reports since my own brother amazingly survived a traumatic brain injury last year when the doctors didn't give him 24 hours to live. I'll say a prayer for Jim, his family, and friends.

I did two books and a bunch of anthology stories with Jim. We always got along. I will miss him.

At the same time, I'm relieved for his sake that he didn't linger with such a terrible insult to mind and body as that stroke.

I never had a chance to meet him, but he put an indelible mark upon me over the years that I read the novels that bore his logo. He helped shape the dreams that I had, through those stories that ran the gamut of brilliantly written to dubious at best. Words cannot describe my sorrow at his passing. He WILL be missed, and my bookshelf will be the sorrier for his passing.

I never met him - but I've got a library full of Baen Books, and maybe that's the proper memorial anyway.

So sorry to hear about this - I've heard nothing but good things about Jim. My prayers are with his family.
