from the New York Tmes:

"The number of cancer deaths in the United States has dropped slightly, the first decline in more than 70 years, the American Cancer Society is reporting today. Much of the decrease is because of a decline in smoking and improved detection and treatment of breast, colorectal and prostate cancers, according to the society.

Yay science! And yay, everyone who has helped, by donating to the search for a cure (yeah, you knew this was coming, didn't you?)

But the search isn't over yet. According to the article, "(in 2003) there were 556,902 cancer deaths, 369 fewer than in 2002. Deaths fell in men by 778, but rose by 409 in women." (emphasis mine).

There's still, sadly, a need for research. And our dollars can help. Walking in the Revlon Run/Walk fundraiser is my way. It can be yours, too. Go. Pledge. My goal is a modest one, but I can't make it without your help....

(a shameless suggestion: instead of chocolate, or a Hallmark card for your sweetie on Valentines' Day, why not tell them you made a donation in their name? 'Because I never want anyone to lose someone they love' is a sentiment that's universal)
