This is a lot more common than most people realize and happens with surprising regularity to humans. In humans it is politely refered to as being Intersexed, or IS for short. Approximately 1% of children born have some degree of ambigous genitalia. That is, they display genitalia that has some aspect of the opposite gender. Usually the condition is rather small and the child leads a normal life. About 1 in 10 end up pretty much in the middle and the doctors have no idea of the child's true sex. Standard practice is to perform surgical procedures to make the child female while still an infant. Intersex advocates are opposed to this proceedure as it often forces the child into a gender role in which they do not belong causing life long anguish. There is a ton of information available from the Intersex Society of North America (ISNA).

Small, possibly useless historical fact: Red (and pink) was once considered too 'strong' a color for baby girls. Powder blue was much more 'gentle' and 'soothing,' as was (I think) mint green.
