Is Veteran's Day. The thanks of a nation is yours, and the thanks of this one individual as well. We know the difference between wars we abhor, and troops we support.

For my neice and her new husband. My dad and my former uncle-by-marriage. For [livejournal.com profile] ginmar and Jeff, all those on LJ who serve and then come home and especially all those who served and, damn it, didn't come home...

May there come a day when we can say "thank you for your time and dedication and toil...and we no longer need to take you away from your homes."

Word. I got emotional yesterday watching a show about Navajo Code Talkers because at the end they sang "The Star Spangled Banner" in Navajo and for some reason that just killed me.
Maybe because they didn't say "I've got a crop. And sheep don't give a shit about democracy.
And the citizenship? For us it's kind of NSM.
Good luck with your bloodbath, Whitey."

I've got a "Support our troops" magnet on the back of my car, and wish I had one to go under it to say, "...get them the hell out of Iraq."

I saw a tagline the other day: "'Iraq' is Arabic for 'Vietnam'."

...and we're greatful for this cultural shift in attitude. I remember listening to my wife's grandfather, a Japanese-American serving in the US Army during the Korean and Viet-Nam wars, re-tell his tale of being a POW in the hands of the Koreans and some of the atrocities witnessed that he is able to recall willingly... only to set foot back on American soil to be spit on while standing in dress uniform at the airport.
I'm happy that people are now willing to recognize that most military are just 'doing their day-jobs', and are greeted with hugs from complete strangers for making it back home. There are many of us that don't agree with the current state of affairs, but really don't have an option or say. A good part of your first amendment rights are signed away in that enlisted contract; it's nice to have friends whose opinions we can live vicariously through. Suri's a hero too ;)
