Something Nice
Jul. 7th, 2005 05:03 pmJust saw this, although it apparently happened last week, and thought we could all use something nice to talk about...
James Patterson shares the wealth
By Anna Weinberg / The Book Standard
Long known as the king of the page-turner, bestselling author James Patterson announced recently that he was inviting others to share his throne. With the help of Time Warner Book Group, Patterson has established the James Patterson Page-Turner Awards, $75,000 in annual cash prizes awarded to individuals and institutions that get people excited about reading....
The Page-Turner prize will be doled out in thirds -- the first $25,000 going to "a person, company, or institution that presents books to the public in an exciting and original way." The second goes to a school that "inculcates the joy of reading in its students." Along with $25,000, that school also gets a day-long visit from the king himself: Patterson has committed to a day of reading, signing and talking about books.
The third $25,000 is divided into ten equal merit awards going to those who have gotten people jazzed about reading....
"Book lovers know that books can be even more exhilarating than TV shows, movies, video games and other entertainments," says Patterson. "My goal in creating this Page-Turner Award is to support the people who create new book lovers, or who remind people that they will enjoy a great book as much as whatever's playing at the local cinema. This country is full of heroes who spread the fire about reading. I hope we can find them, thank them, and help them communicate their ideas far and wide."
Go, him!
