May. 7th, 2005 06:01 pmSin City: Weird. Surreal. At an early point you think to yourself 'turn off the brain and go with it, and you'll have a good time.' And so it was. The most over-the-top and gratuitious violence and female nudity I've seen in quite some time, and none of it bothered me worth a damn, because it was SO perfectly comic book stylized (the blood, in many scenes, was white and glowing, the better for Effect). It managed to capture the feel of comic books perfectly, both in dialogue and the editing. Three storylines, and part of my brain kept trying to conenct them in chronology and theme (we counted several themes, actually, mostly involving decapitation, genital mutilation, and guts being yanked out). Not having read the source material, I can't speak to the interpretation, but it was, overall, quite satisfying. But yah, very very surreal. Might see it again, just to admire the cinematography.
And, after much anticipation -- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Visually Lovely. Intellectually well-done. Emotionally, it left me unsatisfied. And they cut my favorite damn line! Ah well. Still, an enjoyable way to while away a few hours, even if I have no desire to see it again. Trillian was pretty good. Ford was not bad for a totally different reinterpretation, even if I did think they downplayed his off-key weirdness too much. I eventually accepted the guy playing Dent, although he wasn't 'my' memory of Dent. But the Vogons were all wrong, I'm sorry. Totally All Wrong.
Tonight, I think may be a Firefly mini-marathon. But first, some wordage...

Date: 2005-05-08 02:00 pm (UTC)I totally understand why you felt unsatisfied watching Hitchiker's Guide. I left the theater feeling the same way, except, oddly, was gratified by the 'So Long and Thanks for All the Fish' song. It was odd but not quite odd enough. The oddness struck dischordant notes instead of being an orchestra of oddness singing 'Carmina Burana' to perfection. As much as I hate to say it, Alan Rickman as Marvin started getting on my nerves... and I adore that man!
