Oh I dunno, when I'm drafting if I can get over 1000 pretty good words out in a day I can look at myself in the mirror and smile. 2 or (on a really good day) 3 is better. I've had 5 thousand word days, but the Lord of Hosts really has to be with me to do that.
Pat yourself on the back for hitting the 20% threshold, get up, and do it again. Sounds like you're on track, so congrats.
On a good day, if there are no other serious distractions, I can sometimes smoke through 2-2,500 words. Especially if I'm working on a short story. Here, even the good days are much slower.
Part of this is -- third book in a series. Lots of things to stop and think about -- how I'm going to tie this or that back in, or going back to my marked-up copies of the first book to make sure I have a detail remembered correctly, or wondering if anyone's going to notice how much I waved my hands and muttered over that part, especially if I do it again... the thinking slows down the wordage considerably.
(plus, the dire consequences of having to tie-in the two short stories published and the third unpublished, as well. Too many readers already asking questions about timelines and character arcs, bless their nitpicky little hearts)
I sympathize. I've had fantasies now and then about writing all the characters, relationships, places, and dates on the wall de Sade-in-Quills-style (minus the blood and feces) so I can keep track of it. . .
