Elizabeth was frustrated, not a fool. “They know,” she told her plants, choosing one seemingly at random and gently sliding it from the seedling pot, stroking the roots to clear them of excess dirt. “But they don’t understand.” The more she grew in this tiny garden, the more the need grew. But to resist, to draw back, made her physically ill, and earned her a scolding from her mother. A Gift was not to be ignored or deferred.
But neither could it be cut back to fit the space of the garden.
