lagilman: coffee or die (MEDIC)
How you know suri is sick:

1. she falls asleep on the sofa, not once but several times.
2. she does not actually make it to her bed until around 2am.
3. she sleeps until almost 8am.
4. the felines allow this to happen (the moment my eyes opened, however, the 'mommmmmmeeee I'm staaaaarvling' chorus began).

Given a choice between a broken leg and a cold, I'd rather have the broken leg. I could work effectively, then.

Deadlines lurk. Strong tea, warm fleece, a handful of aspirin, and to work I go....

In light of the recent tax comments downstream, I offer the following URL

The Freelancer's Union: Platform for an Independent Workforce

Right now in baby steps, and mostly centered around NYC, but there's no membership fee and it's a good way to keep abreast of various legal and financial tidbits...

(plus, discounts!)

They're also pushing to create a health care plan that would cover more than New York State. The more members they have, the more of a potential purchasing block they have, the better a deal they can get...
lagilman: coffee or die (wine. dude.)
Forgive me, it has been many months since my last wine confession...

Not that I haven't been drinking excellent wines, but I've been remiss in sharing them with you.

I had dinner last weekend at a new South American restaurant in Manhattan (Brazilian fusion, basically) where (in addition to fabulous duck in honey-ginger sauce with peppercorns and a yam puree that was to die for) we also had a wine I picked, pretty much blind except for knowing the region was producing some good and well-priced wines, off the wine list.

Quara Torrontés is a very nice young white wine that reminded me pleasantly of a viognes in the nose, but was dryer in the taste. Fruity and fresh, with a lovely floral finish -- perfect for spicy or peppery food, or just sipping as the weather gets warmer. Seems to run about $10-$12 in stores.

And I see that Quara also bottles a Tannat, which is a rough-and-ready red wine I'm quite fond of. I foresee a trip to the Wine Thief, soon...

(and the semi-final of Top Chef that's showing now, they've been given a bottle of Shaffer cabernet and fresh black truffles to work with. Dear lord. I wish I were feeling better because now I want to open a Killer Bottle)
