"We have to protect people'

President Bush wants 'pro-homosexual' drama banned. Gary Taylor meets the politician in charge of making it happen

Thursday December 9, 2004
The Guardian

What should we do with US classics like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or The Color Purple? "Dig a hole," Gerald Allen recommends, "and dump them in it." Don't laugh. Gerald Allen's book-burying opinions are not a joke.

Earlier this week, Allen got a call from Washington. He will be meeting with President Bush on Monday. I asked him if this was his first invitation to the White House. "Oh no," he laughs. "It's my fifth meeting with Mr Bush."

I'm so glad that Bush the Lesser's time is taken up with such important things as endorsing censorship and moral weeniehood. *spitrs to get rid of foul taste in mouth*

Your right to determine what YOU think is acceptable for YOU is under attack, people. Books, music, religion, morality... they want to take away your choices and replace them with theirs. Pre fixe menus are great for lunch, but I prefer to live a little more a la carte, thanks. How about you?

I wonder how long before Shrub tries to get Will & Grace canceled? Or ban sales of BTVS? It promotes lesbians, witchcraft and women who kick ass, dontcha know.

I am reminded of something Katherine said on one of our last book-shopping trips together. I had been complaining about the dearth of gay & lesbian themed SF&F. She said there wasn't much being published because of the current political climate, and it was probably going to get worse. At the time, I thought she was just being paranoid. Now I see she wasn't.

Will & Grace is apparently extremely popular with Republicans and the Bushistas took out a lot of advertising on it. Andrew Sullivan pointed out:

One of the shows most popular with Republicans, especially Republican women ages 18 to 34, turned out to be "Will & Grace," the sitcom about gay life in New York. As a result, while Mr. Bush was shoring up his conservative credentials by supporting a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, his advertising team was buying time on a program that celebrates gay culture.

Actually, I don't find that a surprise. The gay characters on "Will and Grace" are either mainstream and sex-less, like Will, or the gay version of "Step'n'fetchit", from an actor who refuses to say publicly that he's gay. That's exactly how many Republicans like their homosexuals. Just don't ask to be treated like an equal human being.

It'll be thought police next, you just wait and see. Of course, he's gonna have to dump the Holy Writ in that self same hole- the story of David- yeah, dude, KING David, the giant-killer guy- and Jonathan should do that. "Love passing the love of women" and all that. So send it down the hole, but save room for me, because where my books go, I go.

I'd seen what they were trying to pass in Alabama about a week ago, but I had no idea it was something Bush was interested in as a country wide issue.

I'm always disgusted by this kind of legislature, but I think this time Bush is overestimating his "madate". The majority of people will not tolerate this kind of censorship.

I love that article from the Guardian - the right amount of snark and disbelief, making it plain how pointless and insane this anti-gay crusade is. Love how Taylor isn't actually sure if Shakespeare is going to be okay or not. Shakespeare!

Time to talk to the congress critters - and by the way, note that the very first thing that Bush wanted passed after his whopping 3% mandate got stopped in its tracks by an intransigent Congress. What Bush wants and what he gets, even out of a gov't run by his party, may not be the same thing.

And in the meantime, I'm still waiting for the ACLU to send me my card so I can be officially card-carrying...
