Where "this" is a leave of absence from NYC.

In December, I'm packing up self, cats, and a limited (!) number of books, and hauling cross-country to Seattle, where I will take up residence for a year (or two).

No, I'm not abandoning NYC. I still own my apartment - a friend is subletting, a time-honored NYC tradition, and I can only do that for two years before the co-op board starts making unhappy noises at me. I'll be back.

But then why? various people have been asking since I first mentioned this scheme.

Well.... mainly because I never intended to be a person who lived her entire life in the same place. And for the past 4 decades, although I've moved about, it's always been within the NY-CT-NJ axis. Mind, I love this area, and my soul belongs to NYC (I can show you the paperwork), but.... I'm not a person for sameness-all-my-life. It makes me itch. And travel only scratches so far.  So it felt like it was time for a (temporary) shakeup.

And why Seattle? I like it. I like the Pacific Northwest. I like the combination of city life and waterfront and easy access to mountains, and the sense of flipping everything I know about being on one coast and looking at it from another. I like the fact that new states will now be within driving/exploring distance. And, yep, I like the people there. Well, most of them. Okay, a lot of them.

And there are work-relevant reasons for this location, too.  But more on that later, maybe.

So that's what's been in the planning for the past few months, and this week I signed a lease for my apartment there.  I'm kinda excited, more than a little stressed, and probably more freaked out than I'm realizing.

But I'm really looking forward to seeing the sun rise and set from a slightly different angle, and hanging with the west coast for a while.

But I'm still not going to root for the Seahawks*.

Best of luck with the change! Sadly, I have no knowledge of how you could parlay this into getting up to Vancouver and visiting the set of "Supernatural." But! Maybe someone over here does!

I appreciate Seattle -- almost moved there in 2000 -- and I hope it's a good temporary fit for you.

Many friends in the SeaTac region; holler if you need more! :-)

You and George-plus-three-initials on that footnote. I have to admit enjoying how much he suffers when both Jersey/A and Jersey/B (since Buffalo is the only team that plays handegg in the state of New York) both get out-sported on any given week.

(Look, as a Buffalo fan and Tampa resident, my sports of necessity include rooting for the Schadenfreude of others, because my teams SUCK.)

Look at it this way, you'll only have a 1 hour flight to the next Worldcon! :)

Also what episode of Star Trek was that animated gif taken from. i don't recognize the set or scene.

Sounds exciting.

Wouldn't it be neat if bookshelves could figure out if we meant it if we said things like that and just rejected the book?

"Your assessment of the future utility of this book has been processed and accepted. It may no longer be stored in this bookcase."

Maybe they could even look up resale value ...

"This book is a rare first edition. Its current value is $100,000."

"This book is worth approximately $2 at your local used bookstore."

"This book may as well be mixed paper recycling."

Problem with that would be that all three evaluations could be found online for a single title.

Wow! And cool. Hope to see you at some of the local conventions and writer get-togethers. There is a cool writer's convention in the area I'm moving to, Enterprise, Oregon (Fishtrap). They have year-round events and I'm looking forward to that...some pretty interesting folks come in.

It would be entirely strange if we managed to meet while you were living in Seattle.

Sounds great. I've been thinking of closing up my house and doing the same thing. (Not the Seattle part just the change of scene bit.) Just need to get all four of my cats to agree.
