This heat wave can FOAD.

Yes, I have AC, but a) it costs a lot of money to run an ac unit continuously to keep the temps under 80 when it's 95+ outside [and only cools down to around 75 at night] and b) by the third day the air quality when it's this hot and still is, in a word, sucky.

And yes, I have places I can work where someone else is paying for the AC, but I can usually only stand to be there 2-3 hours before I have the need to get up and do something else [I tend to break my day up into 2-3 hours of work, the an hour of not-work chores, then work again]. And once you go to the library or a cafe, doing something else becomes more complicated (and leaving = dying of the heat the moment I step outside).

Also: CatofSize's need for constant company is starting to fray my nerves. I love him, and I'm willing to stop and cuddle, but he needs to SHUSH while mom's working....

As far as cuddle cat, when mine gets needy I move a small cat perch to just behind and to the side of me where I can pet him occasionally but he's not in the direct line of work. Seems to help as long as he knows he can reach me.

Small IS relative, mine's 15 lbs. I was hoping being closer might mitigate a bit.but seems not for him....

A vet told me mint-scented things were good for stressy situations?

Yeah, I hear you about the AC. It's probably not an option for an apartment, but boy I am loving my heat pump--at least in the less-humid air of the PNW it doesn't run as much as our AC did. But the temps here at least are getting below 70 at night. That kind of thing is why I really do prefer the east side of Oregon (the desert side, not the rainforest side). 90s in the day, 40s/50s at night, and sometimes, as a rancher former brother-in-law from the East Side puts it, "you can have ice on the hay baler in the morning and by noon the foreman's shirt is stiff with dried sweat."

Hopefully we'll be in a cool phase and not killer! nasty! hot! when you come out this direction...

I completely understand. The heat and sun are pretty much killing me.

I loved last night's Daily Show, which proved it's the writers more than Jon himself. "It's been 100 and ballsweat degrees and everyone has set their air conditioning to penguin house."

A/C and a fan *and* a damp dress down here (as I no longer have enough hair left to dampen to effect.)

It sounds like CatofSize needs himself a kitten. Our cat Fionn got terribly lonely and bored when our temporary housemate moved out with her two cats, even though he didn't particularly like them. He was thrilled for the first day or two, then got VERY clingy, as only a Ragdoll can.

So we got him a kitten, one we knew would absolutely adore playing WWF Wrestling with him. Said kitten is now 2 years old, and they happily chase each other all over the place... especially when the heat breaks.

In the meantime, have you tried Feliway? It's really marvelous for reducing feline stress.
