Summer, everyone knows, is for reading. Well, so are Winter, Autumn and Spring, but especially Summer.

So every week, from here through the end of August, I'm going to be giving away a book*. Some of them may be mine, some of them may be by other people. They may be just-out, or entry-points to an on-going series. It will be a totally random and whimsical choice, to keep things interesting.

How do you get in on this? Simple: you comment here on why you need something new to read. Vacation? Stuck in bed with a bad cold? Totally out of book-buying funds? Captured by aliens who insist on a new story every night or they'll eat you?

Tell me.

(you can enter every week, but only once every week. And you MUST identify yourself in your post, either via log-in or a name and contact point. I'm not going to choose anyone who doesn't identify**.)

Ready? Go.

First book: DON'T READ THIS BOOK, edited by Chuck Wendig

Down a lonely alleyway, under a starless sky, lies a city that never was, yet is: the Mad City, where nightmares walk the streets, and a good night's sleep can get you killed.

Here, then, is a book from that place. Within these recovered pages are the tales of the Awake, insomniacs who've walked those perilous streets, bringing a bit of the power of dream with them to fight back the night—always at a terrible cost.

For many, it will not end well. For a few, they might just become heroes—or at least find their way back home.

For you, a choice. Turn away. Don't read this book. And maybe you'll continue to rest easy. Or open the cover and enter a world unlike any you've ever dared to imagine...

*yes, a real, actual, PAPER book.
**the post will 'open' on Monday, and 'close' on Friday. Winners will be chosen over the weekend, and informed the following Monday

I am in need of another book with heros and heroines I can get behind (in front or to the side of)preferably about worlds with some difference to mine and a story where I have to engage my suspension of disbelief but not one where I need to leave all sense and logic outside while I read.

I won't ask you to post, sorry, mail the book to me. If I win I'll collect it when I'm next in NYC...

I have many books but they are lonely and in need of a new friend, preferably one who would fit in and feel at home within minutes of being introduced.

I am in need of another book because my air conditioner is for the pits, its hazy, hot and humid in Minnesota, and I need something, anything, to distract my mind from the unpleasant weather.

So a book of stories based on the RPG Don't Rest Your Head? I think that would keep my mind off of the heat very well indeed.

I can usually reread my collection, no problem, but lately I've been craving books I have never read before.

What a fine idea!
I sent you an email this am, btw: my internet is borked, so I'm going to be a bit intermittent, but I have now finally done my alpha reading.

Something new to read? By an author I haven't read before? Oh, yes, please! My poor tottering TBR piles are full of authors I'm trying to catch up on, so something new would be instantly on the top of the pile.

It's been so long. Staring at the monitor... I tear myself away, wanting to read something, pick up my book and try to turn the page, only my hand meets glass. The book is displayed on yet another screen, the tablet acting as go-between for me and the literature-goodness. I hear a scream, and then realize... it's me.

As I lay on the floor, panting, trying to make sense of the words, I know the only thing that can save me is the honest, true sensation of a physical book in my grip, the tactile sensation of rough paper and crinkling binding.

I pray for this salvation as the cloud of digital texts submerse me in a vortex of virtual discombobulation.

I am desperately trying to make up for all the reading time lost during grad school.

Well, that, and the aliens. Of course.

I'm caught up on all the authors I enjoy and unfortunately am able to finish some books in one day! This voracious reading appetite requires constant feeding of the beast...and well I'm all out of food right now. I'm starving for a new book!

Please send me something new to read! I have been reduced to re-reading John Grisham, and his manipulation of legal procedure is really only funny the first time around. I'm desperate!

Mobile site won't let me add my profile for commenting. Grumble.

I'd love a copy of DRTB. DRYH was my first experience with Evil Hat and the world holds a special place in my mind. I even submitted to Don't Hack This Game. Why not buy it myself? Frankly, I can't justify spending money on myself when I'm the sole earner in my household. When it comes down to stuff for me, or stuff for others, I always take a back seat.

I'm in a reading slump. Everything's starting to sound and read the same. I need something new to break out of this funk.

I need a new book to read because I'm constantly scouting for new authors TO read. Anthologies are great for this...and this one in particular. Not only New Authors(!), but several of my favorites as well (you are very much included in this, [livejournal.com profile] suricattus), whose stories I can read while waiting for their next books.

I've been reading a really good Japanese horror/sci-fi novel series, full of convoluted plotlines, and meticulous worldbuilding, and unreliable narrators, and ordinary people finding the strength within themselves to face otherworldly threats.

And I've just finished the fourth book this week and discovered that there is no more.

Oh, not of the series. There are 15 books currently available in Japan with new ones coming out every year or two. But the English publisher doesn't think the series sells very well here, so they've decided to stop translating it.

I know DRYH is a completely different thing, but it sounds like it has a lot of the same themes, and may hit the same literature spot as the books I'll never be able to read.

I'm out of book buying funds and I love a good read especially in the summer when I don't have IEPs to write.
