I hate car services. I've had them fail/show up late often enough to never feel comfortable taking one to the airport. But the only other option is mass transit which would require me to be out of the house at....5AM on Thursday, for a (7:30am check-in) 9:30 flight.

Meh.

(JFK Airport is the furthest-away, least convenient airport for me. They also happened to have the best flight. Meh.)

I may just not go to sleep Wednesday night. That way I'll be pretty assured of crashing at a reasonable hour once I reach the UK.... right?

Would it make sense to go spend that night at a hotel right by the airport? They will almost certainly have an airport shuttle so you'll make your flight without a problem, and you'll get to sleep in until an almost reasonable hour.

Not really - I'd still have to GET out there, and that would entail another night away from home before a long trip, and an additional expense.

I had considered staying with friends who live closer to the airport, the night before, but see above re: away from home/having to get everything ready a full day ahead of schedule, etc. It just exchanges one hassle for a slightly different one.

FWIW, we use Cabot Limousine and they're always on time, even though they're coming in to Manhattan from nether Queens. They're a bit more expensive than Dial-7 or Tel Aviv etc., but it's worth a little extra $ to us for the reliability factor.

I suspect hiring a car service to come from Queens to the Bronx to the far side of Brooklyn would not be cost or time effective.... (but will recommend them to my folks).

Have acquired the services of a local company that kradical recommended. Here's hoping.... (we built in enough time for them to be late, AND hit traffic, and still get there on time. I'd rather wait at the airport, sleepy, than be rushed through ticketing.)
