Well, got my copy, and a very handsome beast it is. Go thou and buy several dozen copies. Stories from Misty Lackey, and Sue Krinard, and kradical, and Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, and many others (20 stories, which makes it, oh, 70 cents per story. Nice pricing, no?).

But... when I went to look through the story, I noted at least two places where needful changes made in the proofs did not make it into the final version.

Normally I'd shrug and go 'oh well.' But these were changes specifically needed to bring the story into line with the novels, and I was assured that they would be made. So while I still love this story (it's "Overrush," which I read at WorldCon), my pleasure has been dulled by annoyance.

I hate that.


Especially since now I feel obligated to go through with my copy of the changes and see what else was not corrected. Grrr. Frustration.


(and yeah, I know, this means that when I do the collection of "Retrievers" stories, I can advertise the corrected text as the "author's preferred edition." Still annoys me now.)

But it's still a cool antho. And the story stands up on its own without the changes (they were mostly timeline things only the author and obsessive fans will note). Can't wait to get my mitts on POWERS OF DETECTION so they can sit side by side on the "Retrievers" shelf. Oy, I can't beleive I just typed that... *sheepish but pleased grin*

Hey, congrats!

I know what you mean about finding mistakes in your story for an antho. When that happens, the whole book just seems tainted to me. In my story in CEMETERY SONATA II, I had done a name change on one of my characters, and the search and replace function missed one (it was a possessive, or something). I didn't catch it before turning in the manuscript, the editor didn't catch it and the authors weren't given page-proofs. As a result, I've never read the other stories in the book -- it just feels tainted, somehow. Silly, I know, but there it is.

But hey, your "Retrievers" shelf is starting to fill up! This is a good thing!

Yeah, Warner wasn't 100% consistent with making changes. For starters, the changes to my bio weren't made, so it still says I'm "working on" Dragon Precinct, even though the book's been out since July. *sigh*

At least they seem to have made the change from eagle back to gryphon like it should be. I haven't checked the whole thing yet....

Welcome to that hard fact that, you can finish your story, dress it up in its best clothing and send it off to school...but it may still come back minus the sweater, ripped and dirty in places, and with an entirely unauthorized "nickname" name tag stuck to the front of its shirt.

Very much like sending kids off to school. You can protect them from the worst, if things go well, but you can't always protect them from the little annoyances.... %^)

Saving the new book as an incentive to finishing synopsis work...
