Osama Bin Laden's dead, killed by American soldiers.
The fact that he was not captured and brought to trial -- it would have, inevitably, become an international media circus, and no matter how it ended it would not have ended well. There would still be people who claimed that justice was not done, there would still be people who claimed we did it wrong, there would still be people determined to make him a martyr. And there would still be people who celebrated inappropriately*.
[and, it would have opened whatever site hosted the trial to more attacks]
Would another Nuremberg-style trial have been ideal? Probably, yes. But for one man, one country, it wasn't going to happen.
My take: I feel no joy at the death of another. But I won't pretend to sorrow, either. As a New Yorker, and someone directly damaged by the events of 9/11, all I feel is a quiet relief that one mad dog has been put down.
*EtA: to my way of thinking, the only appropriate celebration is a grim "good" and commendations to those who took the risks to get it done, and move ON, world. I will not give him a moment longer of my thoughts.

Date: 2011-05-02 04:00 pm (UTC)But you've always been a person I turn to, to get a sense of things about all this.
And I am hugely relieved by this entry. You hit the ground I'd been trying to find over this and made me feel less... (waves hands) about my reaction to the news.
My thanks, LAG.

Date: 2011-05-02 11:20 pm (UTC)A well done to the SEALs.
You know how long I've been in this business, and it really helps the morale for the good guys to win one or two and seeing someone get their just deserts...
