I know there's been a lot of chatter on-line about the floods in Australia. It's horrible, and terrifying, and heart-rending.

What I haven't seen is any talk about the floods in Brazil, where - at last count - nearly 400 people have died through floods and mudslides. And it's not over yet.

We have the capacity for empathy, but it is limited by what our systems can take, before we overload and shut down.

But tonight? Say a prayer for the folk of Brazil, if you can, if you will.

The BBC have had pretty good coverage and some of my UK friends have been writing about it. But I share your concern.

I suspect much - at least as far as discussion on Twitter/FB/LJ - is that Australia has a strong writer/fan genre community. Latin America, not so much. So you're not seeing the community appeals or benefits, etc being brought up, and no personal stories or connected worries.

Yes. And I don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, so I have no idea what the on-line communities in those languages are doing or saying.
