EtA: My point is not to pick on my uncle (although my wounded ego appreciates the support shown in comments, I'm quite used to him by now) but to highlight the Hugo nomination process starting...!
Last month my uncle (a long-time SF reader) rather dismissively said my Nebula nom wasn't "important" since the Hugo is the "reader voted" one.
I mention this only to remind everyone that Hugo Nomination Period is now open http://tinyurl.com/3557s7o (and yes, I have books eligible!)
*looks innocent*

Date: 2011-01-02 05:31 pm (UTC)I think he meant that (in his opinion) the Nebs are all about politicking and Who You Know. The fact that I am abysmally bad at politicking and vote-trading would seem to negate his argument entirely, but....

Date: 2011-01-02 11:27 pm (UTC)Considering the only people who can vote on the Hugo are those who go to the WorldCon, it's not quite the "voice of the people" that it seems at first blush. It's more the "voice of the subset of SFF fans who can afford to go to WorldCon and are inclined to go to WorldCon." If a "voice of the people" award is desired, there's one already out there, called the Bestseller list.

Date: 2011-01-02 11:40 pm (UTC)Yeah well, looks like I'll never get on that one, either. :-(
Historically, the Hugos ARE the voice of the readers. The fact that so few people vote is more a reflection on the readers than anything else....

Date: 2011-01-03 12:31 am (UTC)Oh, I think you will someday. Then again, I'm biased.
As for the Hugos themselves, I think it's reflection on changing times than reader non-participation. But I'll save that for some of the annual "what's wrong with the Hugos" posts.
