lagilman: coffee or die (stop that)

Y'know, one of the things I LIKED about Livejournal was that it didn't cater to the cross-posting craze. Now, as usual, they've gone and fucked that up, too.

(I don't mind sharing links to a post, but cross-posting comments? FFS, why?)

I am SO with you on this one.

I hate FB with a passion.

So true. FB is where I pretend to be normal. Why oh why would I want to cross-post???

Some people *like* re-reading the same post in three different social networking places?

No, really, I think they're afraid they might become irrelevant if they don't climb aboard the bandwagon.

(I don't mind sharing links to a post, but cross-posting comments? FFS, why?)

Because some people believe everyone wants to see everything they have to say.

I have an ironclad solution for my LJ -- no Facebook or Twitter accounts.

And I'm looking for the setting in my LJ control panel to make this new feature go away and I can't find it. *pouts*

My LJ is my private place. I don't want to share ANYTHING on it with my FB crowd. Even by accident.

Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] ms_danson in [livejournal.com profile] issendai's journal.

1) Home
2) Profile tab --> Settings
3) Choose "Privacy" tab
4) Pingbacks is near the bottom choose "disable"

Everything else (facebook etc) is in the "Extensions" tab of settings.

Oh, I found all that and disabled everything there is to disable, but even so, the FB/Twit options STILL show up on my journal entries and comments. I wonder if I have to log out and log back in for them to take or something...

You can crosspost a comment on a locked entry, which will let the world know that the entry exists and may also reveal its subject line.

The links are there but disabled even if you turn off crossposting.

I have the same solution. We're probably the last two people on Earth not on Facebook or Twitter.

I think there's a whole family in Burkina Faso that doesn't have Facebook. Don't know about their Twitter status.

Ditto on being with you on this one.

I think the timing is presenting itself well for my upcoming switch to a different platform.

If you use Firefox, click the big green "Install" button and the script will install itself. It just works. No mucking around necessary.

If you don't use Firefox, I can't help you. *)

Did you get a pop-up that says "Do you really want to install this?" with a three-second countdown?

EDIT: Oh, and do you have the Greasemonkey extension installed? That would probably help. *)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748/

Install that extension, restart Firefox if necessary, and then try the script again.

You can turn off crossposting in the sense of not linking LJ to your own FB or Twitter account, but there is no setting that stops a commenter from crossposting comments made on your LJ.

Not a clue why they have the comment thing. You'd think people on the receiving end of the conversation wouldn't want the double responses anyway!

As for FB... *sigh* I don't particularly want to be on it, but most of my local friends have moved to it instead of LJ, in some cases, it instead of email even. So if I want to be in on the loop, I need a FB acct, like it or not.

I don't facebook and twitter. I simply don't see the need. LAG, as a writer, you might need them for publicity, but for the "normal" person, it's simply not necessary.

I'm not suspicious of social networks. I'm on eHQ, after all. BTW,I'm on LJ because I wanted to read your LJ, and it was easier to register than have to remember to post my name at the end of my posts.

I have a FB account because that's where my relative are, but it's mostly "I had an interesting day" or "I am in such and such a place" and stops there.

OMG, I had a boring day on FB!
