Things I had forgotten:

for all their lives, the Kitten of Thursday and Boomer have been apartment cats. To them, the washer and dryer are things that live Elsewhere.

Not so, here.

Things I learned:

While the washer sounds a lot like the dishwasher, and so is mildly interesting but not terribly disturbing, the dryer is.... well.

Stage One: WHATTHEFUCKMOMWHATTHEFUCKISTHAT? starting nervously and hiding behind my legs.

Stage Two: ....cautious, crouched staring from a safe distance.

Stage Three: we have not been eaten, therefore we are ignoring it utterly.

Stage Four, when the buzzer goes off: HOLYSHITWHATTHEHELLASTHATMOMDIDYOUHEARTHATMOMPROTECTUS!

Poor babes! I am visualizing the "Rose is Rose" cartoon where the kitten is one giant ball of round fluff with claws, floating above the dryer. Rose is saying something like "There, there, the buzzer is loud, isn't it?"

It's a stacked unit, in a closet, so not really. They've investigated around it, but deemed it Not Of Interesting Smells.

Our dryer is out in the garage but the washing machine is in the kitchen. Thing tends to ignore it as she does most things electronic or noisy but Moo is fascinated by the movement of the clothes in the cylinder.

He puts he front paws on the machine to watch it go round and round - and he stays like that for a really long time. Occasionally, he taps at the window.

Oh dear! Poor confused cats. Mine are inured to the washing machine, but the vacuum cleaner is Teh Evil.

Mostly, although I haven't let them onto the balcony, since it's not kitten-proofed yet. So far, they seem most fascinated by the coat closet, and are thankfully ignoring the pantry...
