o hai, con ed. Do not want.

New Yorkers don't even have to read beyond the subject header. *wry g*

Actually, as such things go this one was barely noticeable -- if I hadn't just been in the process of saving a file, losing power would have just made me grumble and wait, rather than yelping and swearing [file seems to have saved properly, yay, and everything else was already backed up]. And the enforced work-break did allow me to hang out in the hallway with my fellow we-work-at-homers (and fellow cat-people, so Fluffy [yes, really] and Boomer have now had a chance to stare suspiciously at each other). But still. Annoyance.

Ah, ConEd. We love you, not.

And I'm making sure both laptops are fully charged. JiC.

You don't have a UPS?

(No, not the shipping company...)

Overkill? I have two. They cost less than a hundred bucks, each.

Well, mine sit under or behind their respective desks. But you may not have a desk. Or a desktop computer...

Our power glitches fairly often without going black. I have the UPS systems as much to serve as power-line filters as for the battery backup function.

the big point about having a ups is not to provide you indefinite amounts of power, but upon the loss of power, you'd have time to save any files you were working on & shut down your machine.

Here at Stony Brook, the computer center has a room specifically for the their ups, but if they don't shut down systems, the whole east coast of the Internet would go down after 15 minutes. The ups allows them to shut down stuff, transfer to other servers, & put their servers into sleep modes.

Grrr. We hates Con Ed, we does. I still remember the debacle that hurt many Astorian business so badly they never reopened.
